About San Carlos, Ciudad Quesada
The Spanish called the area San Jerónimo de Los Votos when they discovered it in 1640. It was later settled by a group from the Quesada family that came from San Ramón. The town later became known as Ciudad Quesada. The canton has an area called the LLanuras de San Carlos (Plains of San Carlos) a name given to the canton in 1911 stemming from the popular idea that the plains formed from the washing of the San Carlos River.
